Ghosts of the afterparty

        Behind the name primeira desordem stands the artist duo consisting of Hugo Gomes (*1989 in Lisbon) and João Marques (*1989 in Lisbon), who jointly conceived the exhibition Ghosts of the afterparty at G10 Projektraum. As a team they wander through urban Frankfurt and find their inspiration directly from the street: the sculptural-looking high reliefs on display are motifs that the duo finds as graffiti on house walls and reproduces in an elaborate process. Primeira desordem selects the motifs with the lowest spray quality from the exterior walls, columns and doors and transfers these street codes into the G10 Projektraum.
        Humour plays an essential role in primeira desordem’s practice. Wit and irony take on different forms; they weave their way through the artists' works, sometimes sarcastically, sometimes playfully. Used as a weapon or a tool, humour is an acquired skill – just like any form of art. In this sense, the duo uses the kind of humour that contradicts and destabilises seemingly stable expectations, positions and hierarchies. At the same time, humour in its tireless essence, is subtly woven into the works and yet sometimes recognisable at the first glance.
        The drawings that Hugo and João select for their projects are spontaneous, quick spray sketches by rather inexperienced street artists. They are symbols of a rebellious youth, who ravage the inner cities with little spray experience. primeira desordem appropriates the vocabulary of smaller urban crimes and the slang with their pop-cultural expressions to create new, free-standing works. Hugo and João trace the randomly found sketches and graffiti, decontextualise them and recreate them as white, three-dimensional sculptures made of styrofoam and acrylic paint. Thereby, the caricature-like drawings stand out softly from the gallery walls. Naively grinning faces, stylised loudspeakers and rather clumsy scribbles; they are ghostly traces of the originally colourful and garish graffiti. As the exhibition title Ghosts of the afterparty suggests, the works are like unwanted guests and pale figures at a never-ending afterparty. In their artistic reworking and through the transfer of motifs into gallery spaces, primeira desordem questions concepts of authorship, identity as well as the feeling of belonging to a site-specific zeitgeist. At the same time, the works are a homage to the anonymous artists who never wanted to become such.

        is a multidisciplinary project by Hugo Gomes (*1989 in Lisbon) and João Marques (*1989 in Lisbon) that explores the fictional potential of visual, political and social structures. The duo was represented in various solo exhibition as at Ócio in Porto (2023), Monitor Lisbon (2022), Elektrozavod Gallery in Moskow (2021) and the MU.SA in Sintra (2020). Their works were also presented in various group shows as at Arbag in Lisbon (2023), Teatro Thalia in Lisbon (2022), Las Palmas Lisbon (2021, 2020) and the Galeria Municipal de Almada (2019).

        Hinter dem Namen primeira desordem steht das Künstlerduo bestehend aus Hugo Gomes (*1989 in Lissabon) und João Marques (*1989 in Lissabon), die zusammen die Ausstellung Ghosts of the afterparty im G10 Projektraum konzipieren. Gemeinsam wandeln sie durch das urbane Frankfurt und holen sich ihre Inspiration direkt von der Straße: Die ausgestellten skulptural-wirkenden Hochreliefs sind Motive, die das Duo als Graffiti an Hauswänden findet und in einem aufwändigen Prozess nachbildet. primeira desordem übernimmt die Motive mit der geringsten Sprühqualität von Frankfurter Außenwänden, Säulen und Türen und überträgt diese Codes der Straße in den Innenraum.
        Dabei spielt Humor eine essenzielle Rolle in der Praxis von primeira desordem. Witz und Ironie nehmen unterschiedliche Formen an; sie spinnen sich mal sarkastisch, mal spielerisch durch die Arbeiten der Künstler. Als Waffe oder Hilfsmittel eingesetzt, ist Humor eine Fähigkeit, die man erwerben und geschickt einsetzen kann – so wie jede Form von Kunst. Dabei nutzt das Duo die Art von Humor, die scheinbar feststehenden Erwartungen, Positionen und Hierarchien widerspricht und diese destabilisiert. In seiner unermüdlichen Eigenschaft ist Humor mal subtil in den Arbeiten verwoben und mal auf den ersten Blick erkennbar.
        Die Zeichnungen, die Hugo und João auswählen zeugen von spontanen, schnellen Sprayskizzen von eher unerfahrenen Straßenkünstler*innen. Sie sind Symbole einer rebellischen Jugend, die mit wenig Sprayerfahrung die Innenstädte verwüsten. primeira desordem eignet sich das Vokabular der urbanen Kleinkriminalität, den Slang und die pop-kulturellen Ausdrücke an, um daraus eigene, freistehende Arbeiten zu schaffen. Sie zeichnen die zufällig gefundenen Graffitis nach, dekontextualisieren sie und rekreieren sie als weiße, dreidimensionale Skulpturen aus Styropor und Acrylfarbe. So heben sich die karikaturhaften Zeichnungen nur leicht von den Galerieräumen ab. Naiv grinsende Gesichter, stilisierte Lautsprecher und recht unbeholfene Kritzeleien; sie sind geisterhafte Spuren der ursprünglich bunt-schrillen Graffitis. Wie der Ausstellungstitel Ghosts of the afterparty suggeriert, sind die Arbeiten wie unerwünschte Gäste und blasse Gestalten auf einer nicht enden wollenden Afterparty. In ihrer künstlerischen Überarbeitung und der Überführung von Motiven in Galerieräumen hinterfragt primeira desordem Konzepte von Urheberschaft, Identität sowie Zugehörigkeit zu einem ortspezifischen Zeitgeist. Gleichzeitig sind die Werke eine Hommage an die anonymen Künstler*innen, die nie solche werden wollten.
