Carlotta Stolberg
Dreamer, not like the movie title
16.08. 24 - 27.09.24

In her exhibition Dreamer, not like the movie title, Carlotta Stolberg explores the fluid boundaries between truth, dreams and memories. Through various exhibited elements, she creates a delicate composition with which the artist questions her very personal approach to (sub)conscious experiences: how can the past be remembered, how can the process of dreaming be made tangible? With this exhibition, G10 Projektraum becomes a narrative space for the stories of dreams; for the questions that must not be forgotten.
The origin of this exhibition is a dream diary that the artist has created digitally via audio recordings shortly after waking up. In this diary, she quietly captures various dreams, forming partly incoherent narratives and describing scenes that she can no longer remember afterwards. Stolberg shares these lived moments with the public by playing sound from three Cassis Rufa shells. Instead of the sound of the sea, visitors can hear intimate, whispered narratives from the artist as they approach the objects. These bulbous, knotty shells are in contrast to the elements on which they are mounted: smooth polished wooden objects in the shape of a clef; or a filigree, shiny metallic music stand. Stolberg adds a mousegrey, light-absorbing curtain to the installation, which is lifted at regular intervals by a repeating gust of wind.
In contrast to Sigmund Freud's interpretation of dreams, Stolberg's exhibition is not about uncovering a hidden meaning in the dream narratives, but rather an attempt to understand one's own perception. Her installation does not impose itself to the viewer. The elements that can be experienced, such as sound or the moving curtain, only become recognisable upon closer inspection and proximity. The narratives selected for the exhibition are evidence of memories that are just as selective as our own individual perceptions.

Carlotta Stolberg

invites the audience to participate in her world of dreams and to empathise with the fleeting nature of her imaginary moments. Carlotta Stolberg (*1998 in Düsseldorf) completed her studies in Fine Arts and Design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 2022.
