G10 Projektraum is pleased to announce the new exhibition Blood and Soil by Blaykyi Kenyah (*1996 in Sunyani, Ghana). From 12.08.22, the artist will transform the exhibition space into a multi-layered installation, which he will continuously change throughout his performance that will last several days. For the eponymous performance and work, he uses soil, various flowers and plants that correspond to the colours of the Ghanaian flag. For G10, Kenyah will shape the planted earth into varying formations by moving it at irregular intervals over the weekend of 12.08.22 until 14.08.22.
        The vegetative arrangements created by these shapes correspond to traditional Ghanaian symbols: they are talismans of Ghana’s cultural memory and they refer to different meanings and concepts. In his practice, the artist thus seems to illuminate the identification mechanisms of nations and question them: Why do some codes convey a sense of belonging to us and which people do they deliberately exclude? While icons of cultural identity, patriotism and nationalism are supported by the invention of strict traditions and forms, Blaykyi Kenyah breaks with such seemingly permanent concepts. The process itself and the transience of the selected plants question the systems of order imposed by politics. Through the constant change, the symbols, categories and cultures get mixed up in a non-hierarchical way, so that the viewers – depending on their point of view or the moment of the performance – can freely connect with the work.
        The entire process of the performance is accompanied by photographs. Gradually, the walls of G10 will be hung with pictures capturing different stages of Blaykyi Kenyah’s performance. This contemporaneously developing series is similarly ephemeral as the gradually withering plants. The natural cycle of decay is therefore a fundamental part of the exhibition.
        Kenyah’s basic idea of the natural cycle becomes also evident in the rest of his exhibition programme: the artist will repeat the entire Blood and Soil performance on the weekend of 26.08.22 to 28.08.22.

Der G10 Projektraum freut sich, die neue Ausstellung Blood and Soil von Blaykyi Kenyah (*1996 in Sunyani, Ghana) ankündigen zu dürfen. Ab dem 12.08.22 verwandelt der Künstler den Ausstellungsraum in eine vielschichtige Installation, die er durch seine mehrtätige Performance immer wieder verändert. Für die gleichnamige Performance und Arbeit nutzt er Erde, verschiedene Blumen und Pflanzen, die den Farben der ghanaischen Flagge entsprechen. Für G10 wird Kenyah am Wochenende vom 12.08.22 ab 19 Uhr bis zum 14.08.22 in unregelmäßigen Zeitabständen die bepflanzte Erde verschieben und so variierende Formationen bilden.
        Die dadurch entstehenden vegetativen Anordnungen entsprechen traditionellen Symbolen Ghanas: Sie sind Talismane des ghanaischen kulturellen Gedächtnisses und ihnen liegen unterschiedliche Bedeutungen und Konzepte zugrunde. In seiner Praxis scheint der Künstler so Identifikationsmechanismen von Nationen zu beleuchten und sie kritisch zu hinterfragen: Weshalb fühlen wir uns durch bestimmte Zeichen zugehörig und welche Menschen werden durch diese bewusst ausgeschlossen? Während staatliche Ideologien, Patriotismus und Nationalismus durch die Erfindung von strengen Traditionen und Formen gestüzt werden, bricht Blaykyi Kenyah mit scheinbar dauerhaften, feststehenden Konzepten. Das Prinzip des Prozesshaften und die Vergänglichkeit der ausgewählten Pflanzen hinterfragen dabei die Ordnungssysteme, die von der Politik vorgegeben werden. Durch die stetige performative Veränderung geraten die Symbole, Kategorien und Kulturen durcheinander, sodass die Betrachter*innen – je nach Zeitpunkt des Schauens oder Moment der Performance – freie Assoziationen mit der Arbeit verbinden können.
        Der gesamte Ablauf der Arbeit wird fotografisch begleitet. Nach und nach werden die Wände von G10 mit Fotografien behängt, auf denen unterschiedliche Stadien von Blaykyi Kenyahs Performance festgehalten werden. Diese zeitgleich entstehende Serie ist ähnlich vergänglich wie die nach und nach vertrocknenden Pflanzen. Der natürliche Kreislauf des Vergehens und Verwesens ist daher elementarer Bestandteil der Ausstellung.
        Kenyahs Grundgedanke des zyklischen Kontinuums zeigt sich auch im weiteren Programm seiner Ausstellung: Die gesamte Blood and Soil Performance wiederholt der Künstler am Wochenende vom 26.08.22 bis 28.08.22.
